It was tough being an apprentice at Chelsea
The stories of the tough jobs that young footballers have to do when they are ‘learning their trade’ at big clubs are commonplace. Most usually involve having to make sure the star player’s boots were in perfect nick, as well as other more menial tasks.
But we have never heard of the one that Dennis Wise and Michael Duberry made John Terry do when he was a kid at Chelsea.
The current Chelsea defender told all in an interview on the Chelsea website.
‘I’d make their teas and coffees, even silly things like sit on the toilet to make the seat warm for them in the cold winter days at the training ground. It’s bizarre when you think about it but that was part of growing up.’
Bizarre barely covers it John. Imagine asking someone in your office, no matter how new or junior they were, to go and warm a toilet seat for you?
You’d be fired quicker than you can say ‘industrial tribunal’.
Football truly is another planet.
