In fairness, Rooney would have got a few against Panama.
England’s emphatic 6-1 win over Panama wasn’t a surprise. There was never any real possibility that Panama would cause an upset, as they were completely out of their depth.
Harry Kane’s hattrick put him top of the goalscoring leaderboard at this year’s tournament, bringing his tally up to five, having already bagged a brace against Tunisia. John Stones also scored his first goals for England, both headers in the first half.
That Stones brace took his total World Cup goals tally above that of former England captain and the country’s all-time record goalscorer Wayne Rooney.
Rooney only ever managed to score one goal at a World Cup, against Uruguay in 2014. England still lost that game 2-1, as Luis Suarez scored two goals past Joe Hart.
Incredibly, Rooney fired blanks at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, although he had just recovered from a metatarsal injury going into that tournament. He also failed to score in South Africa in 2010. The less said about England’s performances there, the better.
Next up for England is Belgium on Thursday in the final game of the group.
