Jurgen Klopp was attempting to send a message to sides like West Brom – you will not come to Anfield, lump the ball long and get away with it.
The Baggies got away with a point but the Liverpool boss is saying ‘no more’.
As if to emphasise that point, Klopp led his players down to the Kop End and saluted the home fans for a prolonged period.
Klopp also refused to shake hands with the West Brom coaching staff after the final whistle, prompting WBA midfielder James McClean to label him ‘a bit of an idiot’.
Last night, former Ireland captain John Giles gave his take on the crowd-bowing antics.
Gilesey, to put it mildly, is not a fan.
“I’m sure he even thought it was a good idea but it is never a good idea to act the clown,” Giles wrote in his Evening Herald column.
The RTE football pundit feels Klopp does not truly understand the English game if he had to coerce his players down for a ‘peculiar victory lap’.
Giles claims the embarrassment of many of his players was plain to see on their faces and adds that gimmicks like Klopp’s will not have a good long-term affect on his squad.
“I know what he is trying to do,” he continues. “His style is to put an arm around the whole club and try to bring everyone with him but that was working fine until he made a fool of himself and the players.”
Not a fan so.
