Jeff Stelling reveals ‘low point’ of Soccer Saturday career

Stelling will present his final Soccer Saturday show on Sunday.

Jeff Stelling has revealed what the lowest point of his Soccer Saturday career was as he prepares to present his final show on Sunday.

After 31 years at the helm, the Soccer Saturday host will step away from his duties, announcing earlier in the season that he was leaving to “give viewers a break”.

In a statement, he said: “I’ve been at Sky for more than 30 years and loved every moment of my time as part of the Soccer Saturday team.

“It is now the right time to move on and give Sky Sports viewers a break from my relentless rants, bad gags and over-the-top celebrations of Hartlepool United goals.”

Several of his colleagues have paid tribute to the legendary broadcaster including Chris Kamara, who struck up a formidable friendship with Stelling.

Kamara said that he had been a “massive part” of his life and that he loved him “to bits”.

However Stelling admitted that Kammy was responsible for one of the darker moments of his career.

Back in 2016 Kamara – who was known for making an error or two – got Stelling back after he himself got something wrong while covering West Ham’s game against Sunderland at the London Stadium.

Heading over to Kamara, Stelling said: “Let’s go and find out what’s happening at Upton Park, West Ham nil Sunderland nil.

“Does this look like it’s going to end in deadlock to you, Chris Kamara?”

Kammy then replied: “The London Stadium you mean Jeff? Get it right… come on.”

Realising his error, his co-host said: “That’s the low point in my career. Chris Kamara telling me to get it right. Unbelievable Kammy.”
