It’s August, so that means ‘in-the-know’ (ITK) football experts are finding their way out of the woodwork.
Whether it’s transfer deals, starting line-ups or injury updates, someone’s bound to have the inside track – or so they say.
Some will genuinely be ITK, some will be repeating information in good faith, and some will just be making shit up. That’s just the way it works.
We’re not sure what camp this Southampton expert falls into, but we’d wager it’s not the first.
According to a friend of Twitter user David Fergus, a succession of injuries may force Saints forward Jay Rodriguez into early retirement.
Since suffering a cruciate ligament injury in 2014, the 27-year-old has been restricted to just 16 games (12 in the Premier League), and has not looked close to adding to his solitary England cap.
That didn’t stop Fergus asking for a source when another Twitter user revealed ‘J-Rod’ is ‘100% fit’.
Perhaps he should have looked at the user’s name before jumping in so confidently – if he had done so, he might have noticed that he was speaking to Rodriguez’s dad Kiko.

We get the feeling this might be the last time Dave automatically trusts the word of his Burnley mate.
