Jamie Redknapp is comparing Anthony Martial to Lionel Messi and he makes no apologies for it

High praise

The boy’s doing alright for himself.

Manchester United’s new 19-year-old striker – who no-one even heard of six weeks ago – is finding himself in the company of one of the greatest players of all time.

At least that’s the only way Jamie Redknapp can think of describing his talent fairly.

The former Liverpool midfielder has been praising Anthony Martial to the high heavens this week ahead of United’s trip to London (to take on Arsenal) and he reckons there’s only one man he has ever seen better than the French player at this age.

Villarreal v F.C. Barcelona

Redknapp told Sky Sports that he reckons that Martial is ahead of Wayne Rooney when the club’s skipper first came to Old Trafford and, in fact, he is so good that he knows of only one player at his stage of his career who was better.

It’s only Lionel bloody Messi.

“I watched Anthony Martial for 90 minutes in the Champions League and the only 19-year-old I’ve seen better at that age was Lionel Messi.

“I played against Wayne Rooney when he made his debut but this boy has so much intelligence. He knows when to pass, when to cross it, when to dribble and when to shoot. He goes past people like they’re not there.

“Everything he does, there is a reason behind it. It’s like he’s been here before – certain players have this, you can’t put your finger on what it is, but it’s just a quality. I love watching him play. He’s going to be a superstar.”
