Schmeichel couldn’t help but have a little nibble
Peter Schmeichel hit back at Jamie Carragher after the former Liverpool defender made a cheeky dig about Schmeichel signing for Manchester City when he was asked if he would take the Manchester United job on an interim basis.
United are currently looking to appoint an interim manager until the end of the season following the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the weekend.
The Norwegian’s time at Old Trafford came to an end after the Red Devils suffered a 4-1 defeat away at Watford on Saturday.
First-team coach Michael Carrick was named caretaker boss until an appointment is made, with the former midfielder getting off to a winning start as United secured a 2-0 win away at Villarreal in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
Following Tuesday’s Champions League fixtures, Micah Richards asked Schmeichel if he would be interested in taking the job until the end of the season.
Although the Dane has no previous managerial experience, the former United goalkeeper said he would ‘do anything’ to help his old side out.
"You signed for Man City, didn't you?"

Richards, speaking on CBS Sports, asked: “On a serious note, Peter, would you take the job if they offered it to you until the end of the season?”
Schmeichel replied: “I would do anything for that club. Of course I would. I would help them out in any way I could.”
However, before he could complete his sentence, Carragher made a cheeky jibe, sarcastically asking: “You signed for Man City, didn’t you?”
In typical fashion, Richards couldn’t contain his laughter after hearing Carragher’s brutal remark.
Carragher rattles Schmeichel, Schmeichel strikes back
“What is going on with you today, huh?” Schmeichel fired back.
“You know what’s really interesting: after your club [Liverpool] has won one Premier League… all of a sudden, you’re all the way up there looking down on us.”
Both Carragher and Richards burst out laughing at Schmeichel’s response, before ex-City man Richards added: “That’s a big nibble!”
Schmeichel signed for United’s rivals City in 2002 on a free transfer, but only played for one season before retiring at the end of the campaign.
Liverpool and City are in Champions League action on Wednesday night, with the Reds hosting Porto and City welcoming Mauricio Pochettino’s Paris Saint-Germain side to the Etihad.
