Steven Gerrard returned from injury in Liverpool’s win over Swansea last night, but former team-mate Jamie Carragher believes the club captain will find it difficult to win back his place in the first XI.
Despite playing poorly at the Liberty Stadium, Liverpool extended their unbeaten Premier League run to 13 matches and the performances of Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson make it far from a fait accompli that Gerrard will start his final match for the club against Manchester United.
In fact, Liverpool have won all six games that the 34-year-old has missed this season, and with Lucas also in the frame when he returns from injury, boss Brendan Rodgers faces a difficult juggling act as Gerrard’s legendary Anfield career draws to a close.
Speaking on Sky’s Monday Night Football programme, Carragher said: ‘Who do you leave out? Henderson, you don’t leave out. Allen was maybe one of the best players on the pitch against Man City. I don’t think he’ll play Steven Gerrard.
‘The team is playing well. They’ve been on a great run since Steven has been out of the team. Unfortunately, he’ll know himself, when you go out the team and the team continue on a great run, it’s hard to get back in. It’s unfortunate for him but we’ve all been there towards the end of our career.’
