Finally, Jamie Carragher says what everyone should be saying about David De Gea

High praise indeed

Jamie Carragher insists that Manchester United currently have the best player in the world in his position.

The Liverpool legend is of the opinion that David De Gea is now the best goalkeeper in world football, despite the fact that Fifa snubbed the Spaniard when they named their three-man shortlist for the best goalkeeper of the year.

Manuel Neuer, Gianluigi Buffon and Keylor Navas were all ranked ahead of De Gea three weeks ago but Carragher reckons that nobody is better than the United stopper right now.

On Monday Night Football this week, Carragher went so far as to suggest that the 26-year-old is already the second best ‘keeper in Premier League history, just behind Peter Schmeichel who happened to be in studio for the discussion.

“I think he is the best goalkeeper in the world,” said Carragher. “Peter is the greatest Premier League goalkeeper but De Gea is second.

“We have had some greats, [David] Seaman, [Petr] Cech but he is that good.”

An outrageous performance against Liverpool on Saturday afternoon confirmed just how valuable De Gea is to United nowadays.

And Schmeichel, who knows what it to takes to frustrate opposition forwards, echoed Carragher’s glowing praise for the Spain international.

“We talk about goals being scored in the top corner and overhead kicks, this is the same thing,” Schmeichel said.

“This ball is in all the way. It’s like he is flying, his feet aren’t even touching the ground.

“To win the title, you need your keeper to save you 12-15 points.

“If you look through the history of the Premier League, you have to. No matter how good you are, you will concede chances but there are difficult games.”
