Jamie Carragher gives David Silva all the praise the genius deserves

Reuben Pinder

High praise indeed.

Since the huge injection of cash from Sheikh Mansour in 2008, plenty of players have donned the sky blue of Manchester City. Many didn’t work, but a select few stand out as contenders for the title of their best player ever.

The likes of Sergio Agüero, who is now their all-time top goalscorer, Yaya Touré and Vincent Kompany have all played to an extremely high level for City, but Jamie Carragher believes there is one who is a level above them and another who could surpass them all.

Those players are David Silva and Kevin de Bruyne, who combined to score City’s winning goal on Sunday afternoon against West Ham.

On Silva, Carragher said:

“We are talking about a player who goes alongside yourself [Thierry Henry], Dennis Bergkamp, Eric Cantona. All these greats that we’ve had in Premier League history. He is one of the greatest we’ve ever had.”

He went on to add:

“De Bruyne’s going to be another one, no doubt. I mentioned City’s greatest ever player, older fans may say Colin Bell, I don’t know. But David Silva, he’s the greatest.”

With age on his side, Carragher believes De Bruyne could even exceed David Silva in the ranks of City’s best ever players.

“I never thought I’d see someone pull on a City shirt who may actually be better than Silva, but if De Bruyne keeps playing the way he’s playing this season for a four or five year period, he could surpass him.”

He’s always been a fan of the pair.

The pair of midfield maestros demonstrated their quality when it mattered most today as De Bruyne’s perfectly placed cross found Silva’s run before the Spaniard made the perfect connection with the ball to put it the other side of Hammers goalkeeper, Adrian, and make sure all three points remained at the Etihad.
