‘Shut up clowns’
Jamie Carragher has hit out at England fans calling for Gareth Southgate to be sacked after Wednesday night’s humiliating defeat to Hungary.
The Three Lions ended the final of their first four Nations League fixtures with a heavy 4-0 defeat at Molineux, leaving England bottom of their group and winless in four.
Supporters at the ground booed and whistled at full time while chants of ‘You don’t know what you’re doing’ and ‘Sacked in the morning’ could be heard in the West Midlands.
Social media’s reaction was also similar as fans critiqued his style of play and again called for a change of management with just four months to go until the start of the tournament in Qatar.
Carragher strongly defended Southgate on Twitter
Despite the growing frustration towards Southgate there is still a number of people who believe he is the man to guide the Three Lions to success this winter, with Carragher one of those.
The former Liverpool and England defender backed Southgate in a tweet which read: “‘You don’t know what you’re doing’ shut up you clowns. This manager has taken the country in two tournaments to the best positions since 1966.”

Carragher then continued, adding that the theory that Southgate is holding back the squad is ‘nonsense.’
He said: “Also this idea that Southgate is holding this group back is nonsense, this squad is no better than 2004/6 1996/98. Southgate has overachieved albeit with favourable draws. Rest up boys & come back to your normal level.”

Kane remains optimistic despite disappointing defeat
Despite the worst home defeat in 94 years, there is still optimism in the camp and Three Lions captain Harry Kane insisted that there is nothing to fear and also hit back at comments over Southgate’s future.
“It’s a really disappointing question to be asked. Let’s not forget where we have come from,” he told BBC Radio Five Live.
“Gareth has been a key part of transforming this England team to one of the most successful sides we have had in the past 50 years.
“I know it’s disappointing for the fans. It has been a disappointing camp, every now and then football throws up a surprise, we have to look at the big picture.
“It’s the first low point I’ve had in five years, a really disappointing night. We expect to win these games, but it wasn’t our night. We need to stay calm and learn from it.
“We’ve had two fantastic tournaments in a row. It’s not the time to panic. It’s a loss we’re disappointed with but we need to stay calm and we know we have stuff to work on.”
