10 years on from the Miracle of Istanbul – pardon us a day – Liverpool go to Stoke. And they lose 6-1.
The last of that Champions League-winning 2005 squad left today on the most underwhelming of circumstances. Steven Gerrard’s departure finished the final remaining connection to Istanbul in the team and what a way to go out.
His team mate that night – the same night Liverpool rocked the world – Jamie Carragher, wasn’t at the Britannia to witness their humbling at the hands of Mark Hughes’ men. He didn’t even see any of it. But he was embarrassed.
The Liverpool legend described the result as unacceptable and that the embarrassment should be felt by all associated with the club.
And, this, as the travelling fans sang the name of Rafa Benitez today.
The pressure is mounting on Rodgers and Carragher took to Twitter to express his humiliation – and to say that his son left at half time.
Well, his son missed a ding-dong second half which the mighty ‘Pool managed to scrape a draw out of. Over 45 minutes. They still lost by five but, you know…
Embarrassing day for all connected with Lfc 6-1 is not acceptable. Not seen anything but my son left at half time so it must've been bad!!

Just beforehand though, Carra was seemingly trying to console himself with the fact that the Liverpool game essentially meant nothing.
He was at hand to point out what everyone else already knew.
Newcastle stay up Hull go down the only 2 games that had anything riding on them today, every other game was irrelevant.

No-one must’ve told him though that, if Villa win the cup next weekend, Liverpool face starting their Europa League campaign in July. That means an awful lot.
