Jamie Carragher believes that Gavin Bazunu was at fault for Southampton’s defeat to Aston Villa

“The goalkeeper didn’t do well enough.”

Aston Villa sealed a crucial 1-0 victory over Southampton last night, thanks to a goal from Jacob Ramsey.

That goal came at the expense of Ireland goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu, who initially made a brilliant reflex save, but as the ball spun and bounced back into play, Ramsey was able to pounce.

On Sky Sports commentary was former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, and he was quick to pin the blame on the Irish International.

“The goalkeeper didn’t do well enough.” Gary Neville agreed that the Dubliner should have tipped the ball over the bar, or tried to catch it from the original save.

However, the Premier League itself tweeted a clip of the goal in question, and credited Bazunu with “a great save.”

The initial shot had came in with such venom that Bazunu’s reflexes had to be lightening quick and he did brilliantly to get a hand to it at all.

However, yes, in a perfect world and from a position where you can say after the fact, the ideal situation would obviously have been to knock it over the bar.

Speaking after the game, Gerrard spoke about how important picking up the three points against Southampton was.

“It’s a big victory. It wasn’t pretty or stylish but, with where we were in the league, we knew we had to do it in a pragmatic way,” said Gerrard.

“I’m really proud of the boys’ effort, application and commitment. We played better than we did last time. In football, you have to grind and fight and be committed and we worked hard today.

“We will get better in terms of style and possession and that will come but tonight was about the points.”
