James McClean knew that wasn’t good enough, and it kills him.
Ireland’s World Cup dream is over and it ended in the most devastating way.
After keeping the hope alive by earning a draw away from home to a higher-ranked Denmark side, they were embarrassed at the Aviva Stadium in the return leg.
McClean is one of those players who always wears his heart on his sleeve and during his post-match interview with RTE, he showed it to the masses watching at home.
“I don’t know what to say. We shot ourselves. We got a great start and then… I don’t know what to say.”
“I’m devastated, not just for us, but for everyone. It’s been a long campaign. We… we just let ourselves down.”
“Maybe so, I don’t know. Maybe the occasion. I don’t know. They were just better. I don’t know what to say to you. I’m just devastated.”
The fact that he didn’t know what to say, really says it all.
