Report: James McCarthy targeted by Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham

Everton may have to fight to hang on to their midfield linchpin

Irish midfielder has a big decision this summer

It’s no surprise really that two of the Premier League’s big guns (and Tottenham) have targeted James McCarthy.

The midfielder has been one of Everton’s most consistent performers since joining from Wigan Athletic in 2013, displaying craft and economy in his passing as well as intelligence in his positional play.

In short he has been integral to the kind of fluid football that Roberto Martinez has tried to play at Goodison.

But with McCarthy in and out of the team this season through injury it’s no coincidence that Everton have struggled.

McCarthy also missed Ireland’s Euro 2016 qualifier in Scotland through injury.

It’s even less surprising that some of the top clubs in the Premier League are now considering making a move for the 24-year-old.

Mail Online report that Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham are all keen on signing McCarthy in the summer and he would seem to be a good fit for all three who, for varying reasons, are crying out for an authoritative central midfielder.

It remains to be seen whether McCarthy can be persuaded to leave Everton and, more pertinently, Martinez but an interesting few months await for the Ireland international.

Hat tip to Mail Online.
