“When I see how many minutes he was playing this season or which games he was playing then I think it was a mistake”
German legend Lothar Matthaus has told Sky Sports that Jadon Sancho made a ‘mistake’ joining Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund in the summer.
It’s been a tough time for the 21-year-old since he made the £73 million move to Old Trafford in the summer, with Sancho failing register a goal or an assist in any of his 11 appearances.
He’s also struggled to be a regular feature in the side, starting just five of those games and has been restricted to cameo appearances off the bench largely.
And the former Bayern Munich star believes that Sancho made the wrong choice to leave Dortmund.
He said: “You see the players who are playing in Man United. You have Rashford, you have Ronaldo… this means you have two from three and then you have another four players who can play in the third position and one of these three or four players is Sancho.
“I don’t know how he is training at Man United, he has to work very hard to make this step in the first 11 and now he’s far away from the first 11.
“When I see how many minutes he was playing this season or which games he was playing then I think it was a mistake.”
Sancho has also been overlooked for the latest England squad and as per the Manchester Evening News, England boss Gareth Southgate explained his decision to not include him, as well as United teammates Mason Greenwood and Jesse Lingard.
He said:Â “With Jesse and with Jadon, they just aren’t playing a lot of football compared to the other players in their positions.
“I know people say I’m inconsistent but I don’t think I am. If you’re playing regularly for your club you’ve got a much better chance of us assessing your level compared to the rest of the group.”
