Izzy Akinade’s Dublin derby opener was bloody sensational

Izzy... Izzy... HE IS!

Ben Kiely

If anything, Izzy Akinade didn’t showboat enough after his cracking opener for Bohemians on Friday night.

The Dublin derby went down in Tallaght Stadium with bohemians taking all three points against rivals Shamrock Rovers.

Izzy Akinade played a starring role in the 2-1 victory, breaking the deadlock with a stunning finish just before the half hour mark.

Dinny Corcoran played him down the touchline with a clever backheel, then Akinade began bolting towards goal. He used his strength to hold off the challenge of a Rovers defender before unleashing the Kraken and smashing it into the net from an acute angle.

Not a bad way to open your account for the season.

Although a small section of the home supporters didn’t seem to appreciate the forward’s celebration.

The away celebrations didn’t last long though, as David McAllister brought the game level just two minutes later. He got his dome on the end of a hopeful cross and powered the ball low and past the opposition keeper.

It was that man Corcoran who grabbed the decisive goal in the second half. This time there was a role-reversal as Akinade turned provider.

He played a lobbed through-ball which Corcoran awkwardly controlled to take possession inside the box.

Once that ball dropped back down to the Earth, there was no one else getting to it as he made no mistake with the finish.
