“I’ve played in front of most supporters around the world but you’re the best” – Gerrard salutes Anfield

The last stand

Conan Doherty

Steven Gerrard. The legend.

Liverpool came to a complete standstill on Saturday as their greatest warrior fought his final battle on home turf with the crest he has honoured so well at his heart.

And as the captain fought ’til the last, his home town saluted him. They respected him. They worshipped him.

Even in another defeat, the stadium came to its feet for the final minute of Steven Gerrard’s Anfield bow.

The team – losing 3-1 and watching its last chance at Champions League qualification obliterated – wasn’t bigger than this proud club.

Fans sang out Gerrard’s name, legends arose and applauded, and the entire city knew that there were more important things happening here than just a game against Crystal Palace. Steven Gerrard was playing out his final minute on Liverpool turf and it was being marked fittingly.

Momentously.

And, as he welled up to bid farewell to the people who have adored him for over 16 years, Gerrard paid homage to the fans at Anfield that he’ll never represent again as a player.

“I’ve been dreading this moment. I’ve loved every minute of it and I’m devastated that I’m never going to play in front of these supporters again,” he said.

“The first time I ran out at Anfield is a moment I’ll never forget. The first time I got to play for Liverpool Football Club was a dream come true and everything after it is a bonus.”

It hasn’t been a good season to sign off with but Gerrard still managed to stay positive and back manager Brendan Rodgers.

“The club’s in good hands. We have two fantastic owners and a fantastic manager in Brendan. We have unbelievable potential in the squad and I’m sure there will be new signings in the coming weeks.”

But his final goodbye was for the fans.

“I have to save my last thank you to the most important people at any any football club… but these supporters stand out above any of them.

“I’ve played in front of most supporters around the world but, let me tell you, you’re the best.

“Thank you very much. All the best.”

Thank you very much. All the best.
