It’s not going to happen.
Shane Long has pledged his future to Southampton, ending rumours the striker could join Liverpool during in this transfer window.
Jurgen Klopp’s side were linked with a surprise move for the Republic of Ireland striker, and reportedly had a £8million bid rejected.
However, Long says he wants to stay at his current club, despite the increased competition following the signing of Charlie Austin from Queens Park Rangers.
“I’m here to stay,” the 29 year old told the Irish Sun.
“There’s good competition in the squad. That pushes every player to play to their best because someone is waiting to jump in and take your spot.Long also spoke about the difference in styles between him and new teammate Austin, and the benefits of playing regularly.
“Playing 90 minutes week-in, week-out can only do wonders for a player, especially for a striker. I think it’s the best run of games I’ve been on. There’s a reason for that. The gaffer thinks I can cause opponents problems.”
“Everyone could see last year in the Premier League when he (Austin) scored 18 goals that he’s very clinical when he gets chances. He’s someone I can play alongside up front. It’s a different option for the manager.”
“We’re different players. He’s a very good player so when the gaffer pulls me and says he wants to give him a run, I’ll be supportive of him, as he’s been for me.”
He didn’t address the Liverpool rumours directly, but it now seems all but certain Long won’t be leaving St Mary’s during this window.
