This is not the official club award but, Jaysus, come on.
There’s no playing this down.
Simon Mignolet (Simon Mignolet) has won a player of the year award.
The Liverpool goalkeeper might well have been decent for a whole half of a season. He was also poor for a whole other half.
Mignolet is currently joint top of the clean sheets table with compatriot Thibaut Courtois. Cool. Fabianski is one behind him. Garry Monk and Brendan Rodgers deserve more credit for that.
Nonetheless, despite the stick the ‘keeper has shipped this season, despite Philippe Coutinho’s unmatchable form, and men like Jordan Henderson and Martin Skrtel shining in an otherwise dull season, Simon Mignolet has been chosen as the pick of the bunch.
Probably a sign of the times.
The Belgian was honoured at the Gala Awards dinner run by 5Times and he has already split both the Liverpool camp and the wider football nation.
Regardless, he has a trophy in his hands for his season’s work.
