You’ll be doing well to find a better goal scored by an Irish player than this absolute beauty from Derek Walsh.
The Usher Celtic man scored a brace during the Irish defence forces 6-1 drubbing of USA in their final group game of the CISM World Cup in Oman. However, it was his first effort that was easily the pick of all seven goals.
A quarter-way through the match, Walsh scored a Puskas award-worthy belter that is an early contender for goal of the year.
The ball was lofted into the box where Walsh controlled it with his chest. With his next touch, he flicked the ball backwards over the head of the nearest defender and took chase. He then caught it perfectly on the sweet spot of his instep, sending the volleyed effort screaming past the goalkeeper and into the bottom right hand corner of the net.
Unfortunately, the phenomenal win marked Ireland’s last involvement in the tournament. They were forced to settle for third place in Group C after drawing 1-1 with Mali and losing 3-0 to Qatar in their two prior game.
But what a high note to end on!
