An Irish Manchester United fan is prepared to experience his “worst nightmare” in order to raise funds for a great cause.
Mick O’Brien, a lifelong United fan, who cites Eric Cantona as his favourite player, has promised to get a Liverpool crest tattooed on his hand if he can raise €20,000 for a very sick girl from Dublin.
10 year old Robyn Smyth has been battling neuroblastoma, a rare form of childhood cancer, for the past seven years and was previously given the all-clear.
However, the disease has returned and she now needs an urgent vaccine in the United States.
Doctors have given the young Dubliner just a five per cent chance of survival, and her parents need to raise €266,000 to bring Robyn to the US for the treatment.
Although Tipperary native O’Brien doesn’t personally know the family, he can fully empathise with their plight, as his own daughter has lukemia, but is currently in remission.
Mick told the Irish Independent last week that getting a Liverpool tattoo on his hand is his “worst nightmare”, but he’s prepared to do it if it means helping a family currently experiencing a far, far greater nightmare.
“Some of the lads I’m friends with are big Liverpool fans so I know they will be making donations and pushing for me to get the tattoo,” Mick said.
“The tattoo will be a constant source of torment.”
If he reaches his fundraising goal, Mick has also promised to get the tattoo at a local hotel in Tipp, surrounded by a large crowd.
We’ve a feeling a significant amount in attendance will be Liverpool fans.

Good luck Mick, hopefully you reach fundraising goal, but just wear gloves next time you go to Old Trafford.
