Irish fans on Twitter have spent the first half just begging the referee to blow up for full time

Longest 45 minutes of our lives

Darragh Murphy

There’s such a thing as scoring too early.

The Republic of Ireland were odds on to score no goals against heavy favourites France but it took them all of two minutes to make the bookmakers look silly.

Ireland put Les Bleus on the back foot from the get-go and, when Shane Long was felled in the box by Paul Pogba, Robbie Brady was given the opportunity to add to his Lille winner on Wednesday night.

There was no mistake from the set-piece specialist as Brady hammered the spot kick off the post and into the back of the net.

And Irish supporters were united in praying for full time to just arrive.
