Looks like it won’t be Anfield 1995 all over again whatever happens later this year
On that famous night twenty years ago Patrick Kluivert and co ripped Ireland apart and ended our hopes of making to Euro ’96 as the Netherlands beat us 2-0 and ended the Jack Charlton reign.
But the Oranje team of 2015 don’t look like they will even make a play-off spot things are going so badly in their qualifying group for next year’s tournament in France.
The Dutch who lost 1-0 to Iceland midweek at home, slumped to a 3-0 loss to Turkey this afternoon.
Currently they are in fourth spot in their group and if they were to miss the tournament it would mean that they would not make a European Championships for the first time in thirty years.
After today’s result they are now in fourth spot in their group and two points behind Turkey. They can’t automatically qualify as those two spots are occupied by Iceland and Czech Republic.
Holland’s final two games are are away to Kazakhstan and at home to Czech Republic in October which means that Danny Blind’s side will need a miracle if they are to make next year’s action.
That’s all of interest to us because we will be hoping for a play-of spot ourselves if things pan out well in our own group.
If we do make a play off then we will be seeded with our co-efficient helping us hopefully avoid some of the bigger teams in the knock-out stage and with the Netherlands not making that stage(fingers crossed) we may be drawn against a team similar to Estonia in 2011.
Straws, consider yourself clutched.
What the hell has happened to Holland?
