Ireland move up five places in latest Fifa world rankings

Robert Redmond

The Republic of Ireland have moved up five places in the latest world rankings.

Mick McCarthy’s side won both of their Euro 2020 qualifiers last month. Ireland recorded a 1-0 victory away to Gibraltar and beat Georgia by the same score line in Dublin three days later.

The results have seen the national team jump back into the top 30 of the Fifa world rankings.

Ireland’s win over their Gibraltar was their first victory in a competitive game since October 2017.

They are now ranked 29th in the world, up five places from the last rankings update back in February.

McCarthy’s side are ahead of Northern Ireland, who are ranked in 34th spot, and Scotland, who have dropped down four places to 44th.

Wales are ranked 18th in the world and England moved up one spot to fourth place.

The top three remains as it was. Belgium are in first place, world champions France are second and Brazil are third.

Ireland’s Group D opponents Denmark and Switzerland are both ranked in the top 10 in the world.
