Ireland underage international called up to Manchester City squad

Republic of Ireland U19 defender Tyreke Wilson has been called into the Manchester City squad for the Blues upcoming pre-season tour of the United States.

The Premier League champions will play Borussia Dortmund in Chicago on Friday, July 20, before heading to New York to play Liverpool on Wednesday, July 25, and then finishing their trip with a match against Bayern Munich in Miami on Saturday, July 28.

A son of former Ireland underage international and Coventry City midfielder Karl Wilson, Tyreke will join Aymeric Laporte, Oleksandr Zinchenko and France World Cup winner Benjamin Mendy in the squad while new signing Riyad Mahrez will also make the trip stateside.

City have a noted history of developing Irish players with Glenn Whelan, Stephen Ireland and Willo Flood all coming through the academy, and in recent years Jack Byrne and goalkeeper Ian Lawlor both made the trip from Irish schoolboy football to City’s academy before signing professional contracts.

The Premier League club aligned with Cherry Orchard in 2007 to form a scouting network with Wilson the latest product of the Dublin club’s storied development program.
