The FAI have said they intend to report the incident to FIFA and UEFA.

The Republic of Ireland’s Under 21 friendly against Kuwait was abandoned this evening during the second half, following the directing of a racist remark towards an Irish player.

Ireland had been leading the game 3-0 before the player, who was on the substitute’s bench at the time of the incident, was racially abused.

Reporting the incident immediately to the match officials, the FAI reported that a Kuwaiti player had uttered a racist remark towards a member of their playing squad.

The association also added that it intends to refer the serious incident on to both FIFA and UEFA for further investigation.

In a statement released on Twitter following the incident, the FAI said that it;

“Regrets to announce that today’s U21 international against Kuwait has been abandoned after a racist remark was made by a Kuwaiti player towards one of our substitutes”.

“The FAI does not tolerate any racism towards any of our players or staff and will reporting this serious matter on to FIFA and UEFA”.

The game was Ireland’s second fixture of their summer tour of Austria, with the Boys in Green having drawn 2-2 against a Ukrainian side containing Chelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk on Saturday.

Ireland’s first game of the tournament had also been cancelled, after the Gabonese Under 23 squad decided at the last moment not to travel.
