Mick McCarthy is preparing for his first game in his second stint as Republic of Ireland manager.
Ireland take on Gibraltar in a Euro 2020 qualifier on Saturday evening, 16 and a half years after McCarthy’s last match in charge of the national team.
On October 16, 2002, Switzerland came to Dublin and beat Ireland 2-1 in a qualification game for Euro 2004.
Coming a month after a 4-2 defeat away to Russia, and four months after the Saipan fall-out, the defeat to the Swiss proved to be McCarthy’s final game in his first stint as Ireland coach.
