Ireland hammering dredged up in criticism of Christian Eriksen’s performance

Inevitable

Ben Kiely

We all know what Christian Eriksen did at the Aviva Stadium on Tuesday night.

Christian Eriksen sank Irish hearts during Denmark’s 5-1 thumping of the Republic of Ireland in the World Cup play-off second leg.

His first goal, in particular (don’t worry, we’re not cruel enough to show it) had football fans around the globe purring. At the time, there were some folks throwing around that ‘world class’ label to describe the Dane.

In fairness, some people got a little carried away with the initial showering of praise.

As we all know though, once a player who’s not consistently viewed as one of the world’s elite suddenly gets slapped with that tag, a disappointing performance is an inevitability. Eriksen had to wait just four days for everyone to turn on him.

The consensus that Eriksen was one of the most underappreciated geniuses in the beautiful game took a breather when Tottenham travelled to Arsenal for Saturday’s North London Derby.

Goals from Shkodran Mustafi and Alexis Sanchez sealed a memorable 2-0 win for the Gunners. While it was a solid performance from Arsenal, Spurs players received their fair share of criticism.

Eriksen didn’t have the best showing of his career at the Emirates and the Twitterati weren’t shy of bringing up what he did against the Boys In Green as a way of proving that he is now ‘overrated’.
