This will take some wrangling.
Real Madrid’s year-long pursuit of Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has hit the bricks after both clubs failed to get necessary documents sent through in time for the end-of-window deadline.
It appeared that the clubs had reached an agreement – €25m plus Costan Rican goalkeeper Keylor Navas moving to Old Trafford – but, as of this morning, the deal is dead in the water.
The La Liga side have, this morning, contacted Fifa to appeal the rejection of the De Gea transfer.
Real Madrid sources are pointing the finger at United officials.
United insist they sent through the documents and have a receipt to back them up.
Real, in return, claim the Premier League side sent the documents through in the wrong format, creating the hold-up.
The Spanish transfer window closed at 11pm last night so there appear to be three options for Real.
- Appeal the ‘void transfer’ decision to Fifa, who are responsible for sanctioning international deals.
- Promise/guarantee €25m to United and arrange duel swap deals for Navas and de Gea.
- Do nothing and return to buy de Gea in January, or next summer’s transfer window.
