Harry Redknapp is convinced that if Manchester United wanted to appoint Jose Mourinho, they would have done so already.

The former Tottenham and West Ham manager believes Louis van Gaal will remain in charge for the remainder of the season, despite strong rumours about the Dutchman’s impending resignation.

‘I think they will wait until the summer and go for somebody like Pep Guardiola or Diego Simeone, if they miss out on the top four,’ Redknapp wrote in his column for the Daily Telegraph.

Redknapp suggested United will struggle to finish in the top four, insisting former club Spurs – as well as Arsenal, Manchester City and leaders Leicester – remain in a four-way battle for the title.

But he would still be ‘really surprised’ if Van Gaal moves on before the summer, explaining: ‘I cannot see anything happening with Van Gaal because, quite simply, if United wanted to get rid of him they would have done it by now.’
