Maguire has hit back at recent reports

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has denied suggestions that he and Cristiano Ronaldo are embroiled in a row over the captaincy at the club.

It was reported on Thursday (February 17) that Rangnick has spoken to both Ronaldo and Maguire with discussions including relinquishing the latter of his duties as captain until the end of the season.

One source reportedly told The Mirror: “Originally, Ronaldo was asking players to back Harry. But the problem is the manager now wants Ronaldo to mentor all these younger players.

“That’s left Harry in no man’s land, as he’s the captain and having to say and follow whatever Ronaldo says, to keep everything sweet.”

However, the England international has since hit back at these claims, insisting that they are ‘incorrect’ and that the squad is ‘United’.

On Twitter, he wrote: “I’ve seen a lot of reports about this club that aren’t true and this is another. Not going to start posting about everything that is written but I needed to make this one clear. We’re united and focused on Sunday. Enjoy your day everyone”.

The report added that other members of the United squad believe it is increasingly likely that Ronaldo will become the captain and that Maguire is ‘frustrated’ that interim manager Ralf Rangnick sees the Portugal forward as the perfect mentor to the younger members of the squad.

United currently sit fourth in the Premier League and remain two points clear of West Ham United in fifth.
