Guam, roughly the same population as Donegal, is making serious waves in World Cup qualifying

David trumps Goliath

Ben Kiely

The tiny island of Guam is really shaking up the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

The football minnows historically have had a torrid time trying to make it to the World Cup.

Their campaign for the 2002 tournament ended with a 19-0 defeat to Iran and a 16-0 thrashing at the hands of Tajikistan. However, they appear to have fixed their curse for the 2018 qualifiers.

Their group opener this time around was a 1-0 win over Turkmenistan, which bosted their confidence for their next match against India, a country with a population roughly 7,500 times bigger than the football minnows.

However, despite a late goal from India causing a nervy finish, 174th ranked Guam managed to hold on to a 2-1 victory to see them become the unlikely early leaders of the qualifying group.

Not bad for a country with only 165,124 inhabitants.
