Watch: Goal machine Joe Allen scores an absolute screamer for Wales

What a strike

Simon Lloyd

The goal that saw Wales open the scoring in Vienna on Thursday night was a bit special.

Not only was it a brilliant strike, it also came courtesy of the left foot of none other than Joe Allen, who’s become something of a prolific goal scorer in recent weeks.

Fresh from scoring Stoke’s late equaliser at Old Trafford at the weekend, Allen lashed home the first goal of Wales’ World Cup qualifier against Austria with just over 20 minutes played.

Whereas his goal on Sunday had been a touch fortuitous, this one was an absolute peach. Austria had failed to clear a Welsh attack, and as the ball bounced once as it left the home side’s box, Allen let fly, smashing the ball beyond the goalkeeper’s grasp and into the corner of the goal.

Allen’s Stoke teammate Marko Arnautovic pulled his side level a few minutes later, but a freak own goal on the stroke of half-time saw the Welsh re-take the lead.

There’s no doubting which goal was the most memorable, however.
