So, having discovered that Gianluigi Buffon – one of the greatest goalkeepers ever to have had graced a football pitch – had altered his facial hair, we knew this was a story we simply couldn’t ignore.
In recent years, we’ve come to expect the lower half of the 38-year-old’s face to be quite beardy. At the very least, it’s been covered in relatively dense stubble. It has not always been this way of course. Some of us are old enough to remember Buffon in his Parma days, when he seemed barely old enough to have sprouted facial hair. Here, look.
But one thing we’ve never seen is Gianluigi Buffon with a moustache. Until now, that is.
