Brendan Rodgers says Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard should be given time to think about next career move.
Gerrard’s future at Anfield has been a source of much speculation in recent weeks but it seems that the club are willing to keep the 34-year-old in pay dirt for a little while longer.
Rodgers has confirmed that the club captain has been offered a new deal but added: ‘It is a big decision in terms of committing where his next contract should be. It certainly won’t be about money.’
Rodgers then bigged up his bromance with the former England captain. ‘I love working with Steven – he is arguably the best player who has played in the Premier League – I hope that continues, but he deserves as much time as it takes to make the decision.’
Rodgers and Gerrard have had to deny there has been a falling out between both men in recent weeks with the player rested for the away trip to Real Madrid in the Champions League as well as Saturday’s win over Stoke.
Elsewhere, Glen Johnson looks like he’s on the hunt for a new club shortly as he’s resigned to not being offered a new deal at Anfield.
The full-back literally put his neck on the line to score the Reds’ winner against Stoke on Saturday, but has become an increasingly unpopular figure at the club due to his proclivity for errors and general decline in form.
The 30-year-old’s current contract expires next summer but with Liverpool reportedly only prepared to offer him a new deal on significantly reduced terms, the England man is likely to explore other options.
‘I have enjoyed the majority of my six years here but if I haven’t got a contract, I can’t stay,’ Johnson said. ‘It does play on your mind but that is when you have to be professional and do your best for the team.
‘I’m not going to go crawling to anybody. They know where I am and they know the situation. There were minor talks at the end of last season but they were minor talks. There was nothing that I could accept or reject, just minor talks.’
