The London club are exploring their options for the position.
Edouard Mendy was the number one goalkeeper under previous managers Thomas Tuchel and Frank Lampard but has lost his place under current head coach Graham Potter.
Kepa Arrizabalaga has re-gained the number-one spot after a long spell on the sidelines after a collapse in form under Lampard.
The Spanish goalkeeper has conceded 17 goals in 20 games this season and kept nine clean sheets. Chelsea are said to be looking to provide him with more competition next season.
According to Chelsea reporter Simon Phillips, the Blues are interested in signing Bazunu. They are also tracking Everton's Jordan Pickford and Brentford goalkeeper David Raya.
Bazunu, 20, has experienced a difficult first season with Southampton. The Dublin-born goalkeeper has conceded 45 goals in 26 games and kept just two clean sheets so far this season.
According to FBref, the Ireland goalkeeper has the worst save percentage of any first-choice goalkeeper in the Premier League during the current campaign (52.4 per cent).
Bazunu, however, has not been at fault for all of the goals he has conceded. The Saints have struggled all season and are currently bottom of the Premier League.
The Irish goalkeeper is just at the start of his career and was highly regarded at Manchester City, his former club. Chelsea's owners have also been aiming to sign young, high-potential players, and Bazunu fits that mould.
Bazunu started his career with Shamrock Rovers and made his debut for the club aged 16. He then joined Man City and had loan spells with Rochdale and Portsmouth before signing for Southampton last summer.
The goalkeeper has played 13 times for Ireland.
