Gary Lineker has a pop at Ireland defender Matt Doherty

Jack O'Toole

Republic of Ireland defender Matt Doherty found the net for the first time in his Premier League career on Saturday.

The problem for the Dubliner was that he put the ball into his own net to give Leicester City the lead before James Maddison scored before half-time to give the Foxes a 2-0 lead.

Leicester trapped Wolves in their own half before Wilfred Ndidi laid the ball off to Marc Albrighton who whipped in a dangerous ball to the back post where Doherty headed the ball into his own net.

Despite the bad start against Leicester on Saturday, Doherty is confident that Wolves can compete this season but that a lot more games will be ’50/50′ chances for the Premier League newcomers.

“I think we’ll be good, confidence means a lot in football and it’s pretty high at the moment,” Doherty told the Shropshire Star.

“We know it’s not going to be easy, it will be tough. But that’s why we’re in the league, we want to be challenged.

“The confidence is always pretty high in the camp. Why would it not be after the success of the season we’ve just had.

“It’s a bit like the Championship, every game is hard, but the difference in the Championship is you can go to places and think you can definitely win there, or at home almost a guaranteed win.

“This year it’s a bit more 50/50 and whoever plays better on the day will win.”
