Manchester United’s new signing Fred left Brazil training with an ankle injury on Thursday

It was announced on Tuesday that an agreement was in place between United and Shakhtar Donestsk for Fred, who played for his national side in their World Cup warm-up match with Croatia at Anfield last weekend.

Brazil are currently based at Tottenham’s training base prior to flying out to Russia, and footage posted to Twitter by Luiz Felipe Castro showss Fred go to ground after a challenge from Real Madrid’s Casemiro. Castro’s previous tweet described how the 25-year-old had appeared to be in ‘a lot of pain’ following the incident.

Fred soon received treatment for the injury and was unable to take part in the rest of the training session. Although the severity of the injury is currently unknown, this could be a blow to his hopes of taking part in the World Cup.

Brazil’s first game takes place on June 17 against Switzerland. They will also face group matches against Costa Rica and Serbia, before hopefully progressing to the knockout stages. Prior to their departure for Russia, they will also play a friendly with Austria in Vienna.

Fred completed his United medical at the club’s Carrington training complex earlier this week and is expected to sign a four-year contract with the option of an additional year. Although United announced the deal on Tuesday, it’s yet to be formally completed.
