Ex-Ireland international says ‘silver spoon’ Frank Lampard is ‘lucky’ to get Everton job

“He’s a lucky man.”

Tony Cascarino has suggested that Frank Lampard is fortunate to have been appointed Everton manager. The former England midfielder was announced as the Toffees new coach on Monday, a year after he left his last post with Chelsea.

Everton will be Lampard’s third job in management, and Cascarino reckons he is ‘lucky’ to be given a Premier League manager’s position given his record in the dugout so far.

Tony Cascarino: Frank Lampard is a ‘lucky man’ to get Everton job.

Lampard took over at Derby County in 2018, his first post in management. The Rams finished sixth in the Championship and lost in the play-off final to Aston Villa.

Lampard was then appointed Chelsea manager, where he blooded a raft of young players and helped the Blues finish fourth in the Premier League. He was sacked last January with the club in ninth place.

Thomas Tuchel, Lampard’s successor, guided Chelsea to a top-four finish and they won the Champions League.

Cascarino has questioned the trajectory of Lampard’s coaching career, asking which other manager currently working would go from finishing sixth in the Championship to taking over at Chelsea.

“He’s a lucky man,” Cascarino said on TalkSport.

“I mean that in a good way because he was an incredible player. A fantastic player.

“He got given the Derby job. Obviously, uncle Harry (Redknapp) had a bit of an involvement with Derby and recommended him. Rightfully so, he’s an intelligent guy.”

Cascarino questions Everton decision to appoint Lampard.

Cascarino also said that Lampard’s opportunities in management owe a lot to his stellar playing career.

The former Chelsea striker said the new Everton manager has ‘a silver spoon in his mouth.’

“What manager in the Championship coming sixth would get the Chelsea job?” Cascarino asked.

“Absolutely nobody because he’s a legend at Chelsea and rightly so.”

“This is a pretty, not very nice line to use, but I’ll say it because I’ve thought about it: He’s the manager with a silver spoon in his mouth.

“Because a lot has happened for Frank because of how good he was as a player. He hasn’t earned his stripes as in, what he’s achieved, to be Chelsea manager or Everton manager.

“They were circumstances. And one of them was obviously Chelsea being a legend of the football club.

“This isn’t sticking pins in Frank, this is factual stuff is what I’m coming from.”

Everton’s first match under Lampard is on Saturday against Brentford in an FA Cup fourth-round tie at Goodison Park.
