Forget about the defence, here’s the stat that shows where Liverpool’s problems really lie

Where are all the goals?

Damning stuff.

There’s been a lot of talk about Jurgen Klopp bolstering his defensive and goalkeeping options  this January, but it won’t matter who Liverpool bring in at the back if they don’t address their shortcomings at the other end of the field.

Only five teams have scored fewer than Liverpool’s 22 league goals this season – and three of them are in the bottom four – and that paltry return marks a new low in the history of the club.

It says a lot for Liverpool’s struggle to find a reliable attack that three of the top six seasons in this list have come in the last six years.

The club are not short of striking options, but with Daniel Sturridge unable to find a run of fitness, Christian Benteke seemingly unsuited to Klopp’s preferred style of play and Roberto Firmino and Divock Origi yet to hit form after their summer arrivals, can the German resist dipping into the market for another forward this month?
