There are a few way a manager fresh to English football can win the fans over.
Most opt for grandiose speech about how they “believe in attacking football” and want to win trophies, how they’ve always loved the English. As Jose “The Special One is actually a misquote” Mourinho will tell you, it generally it gets the job done.
But then there’s always a couple of mavericks who want to show how gosh darned English they are. Think Cristian Gross with his London Underground ticket when he got the Spurs job, or Roberto Mancini with his (wonderfully styled) blue and white scarf when he took over at Manchester City.
Now we have the latest and greatest entry to the canon: Pep Guardiola donning a Stone Island jumper for a pre-season friendly.
