Cafu must be watching through his fingers.
Liverpool fans will remember Fabio Borini as former manager Brendan Rodgers’ first signing for the Reds.
The Italian arrived as a promising forward but Borini struggled on Merseyside, scoring just three goals in 38 appearances before he was sent to Sunderland on loan.
He turned that move to the Black Cats into a permanent one in 2015 but also failed to set the world on fire at the Stadium of Light as he netted on 17 occasions in 93 appearances for the club.
Still only 26, Borini felt he had been thrown something of a career lifeline when he showed up at AC Milan last summer on loan with an obligation to buy.
He has primarily been utilised as a forward for the Serie A side but that changed on Thursday night, in AC Milan’s Europa League Round of 16 second leg clash with Arsenal.

Yes, that’s Fabio Borini at right back for AC Milan.
Fabio. Borini. Right back. AC MILAN!!
With Gennaro Gattuso’s side chasing a 2-0 deficit thanks to the Gunners’ away day victory last week, one would assume that Gattuso felt that he needed as many attackers on the pitch for the 90 minutes in the return leg at the Emirates.
But the decision to deploy Borini at full back absolutely baffled viewers watching from home.
Fabio Borini playing right back for AC Milan?! What on earth has happened to football

Fabio #Borini is playing right back for @acmilan. Just think about that for a moment. The team of Maldini, Costacurta and Baresi…..has a weirder thing ever happened on a football pitch? #ARSMIL #ARSACM

How on earth have AC Milan gone from Champions League giants with awesome players like Nesta, Kaka and Ibrahimovic to Europa League strugglers with Borini as a makeshift right back???#ARSACM

Borini’s metamorphosis from striker to right back is one of the weirdest transformations in football.
