Ex-Liverpool keeper Jerzy Dudek has an interesting theory on why Casillas is underperforming

Dudek's two cents

Ben Kiely

Jerzy Dudek has weighed in his opinion on why the Real Madrid shot-stopper hasn’t been in his best form of late.

Casillas has come under heavy criticism for his poor form, which culminated with him leaking four goals in Madrid’s 4-3 defeat to Shalke on Tuesday.

The Spaniard had to contest for his first-team place with Diego Lopez last season but has been the number-one goalkeeper for Los Blancos since Lopez left to join AC Milan.

Former Liverpool and Real Madrid keeper, Dudek reckons that the Iker benefited greatly from having competition for places at the club.

He’s the undisputed No 1 [in the world]. I don’t think there’s any goalkeeper in Europe who can compare to him.

(Being dropped ) was difficult for Casillas, but he learned a lot from that experience.

However, Dudek cited another reason, which has nothing to with football, for Casillas’ sub-par performances.

Then he became a father and this greatly affects the concentration of a player. His attention was on his son and you realise that’s more important than any record winning streak, for example.

Intriguing theory.
