Everton right back Seamus Coleman believes his honesty may have cost his side a penalty

"I'm not going to dive"

Just when you thought you couldn’t love Seamus Coleman any more.

The Everton right believes he paid the price for being too honest on the football pitch as a penalty wasn’t awarded when he was challenged in the Crystal Palace box on Wednesday night.

Coleman lost his balance and fell to his knees but, in the same movement, leapt to his feet to pursue the ball which remained in play.

The referee kept his hands by his sides and a gilt-edged chance for the Toffees to break the deadlock in what turned out to be a 0-0 draw was denied.

And Coleman has claimed that the official would likely have given the spot-kick if he had dramatically thrown himself to the turf and play-acted but that’s just not in the DNA of the Donegal man.

“Some players have a better knack of naturally going down when they get a touch than others,” Coleman told Sky Sports after the game.

“I felt he’s touched me so I’ve went down and I’ve waited to see will the ref give anything and he didn’t.

“Maybe other players would make more of a meal of it and, I say it all the time, I say I’m not going to dive.

“I got a touch and sometimes maybe you have to make a meal of it nowadays because that’s the way it seems to be going.

“I felt a little touch, didn’t get anything, got up and got on with it whereas some players might stay down and make more of a meal of it.”
