They say honesty is often the best policy, but there ought to be a few exceptions.
Manchester United supporter Martyn Murphy was named as the club’s ‘fan of the year’, and his prize was a surprise meeting with manager Louis van Gaal, courtesy of sponsors Chevrolet.
When presented with a once-in-a-lifetime meeting with your club’s manager, it shouldn’t be too hard to put on a brave face and tell a white lie or two.
But whether it was down to Murphy being taken by surprise, or just wanting to tell LVG what he really thought, he was nothing short of honest when telling the Dutchman whether he was a fan of his management.

In fairness to the supporter, who hails from the Isle of Man, he could be forgiven for wanting to reserve judgement until the end of the season.
Plenty of higher-profile figures have changed their mind on Van Gaal throughout his Old Trafford spell, so for a fan to say he backs the boss “most of the time” is hardly unreasonable.
After all, you don’t want to look stupid by giving him your full backing, only to see United fall short of the Champions League and lose the FA Cup final to Crystal Palace.
