Ireland U21 star on course to follow in Evan Ferguson’s footsteps after wonder goal

Lee Costello

What a strike.

Ireland are hoping that Andrew Moran is on course to follow Evan Ferguson’s footsteps after his unbelievable strike against Turkey.

The Irish went 1-0 down early in the game when Kenan Yildiz converted a penalty, but Moran managed to equalise when he connected with a corner on the 56th minute, to volley it into the top corner.

The Ireland captain was Paul Scholes-esque with his technique, poising himself beautifully, using his first touch to elevate the ball just right, before timing his strike to perfection, and then directing it straight into the far corner.

It was one of those where you knew it was going to be special the second it hit his foot, but he wasn’t finished there as he lead the charge to find a winner.

However, it was Turkey who managed to get in front once again, and everything looked set for the away team to go home with the win.

Moran was not deterred and on the 87th minute he managed to win a crucial penalty that was converted by Blackburn Rovers’ Zak Gilsenan to make it 2-2.

Then on the 96th minute, Ireland sent the stands wild when Aidomo Emakhu stole the victory with a delightful finish right at the death.

With the Ireland senior team struggling for goals, and Ferguson out injured, you would almost be tempted to give Moran the call up for the game against Holland after that performance.

Like Ferguson, the youngster is currently at Brighton, and he will certainly be hoping to follow in his clubman’s footsteps and make his stamp on the Premier League.

With a lot of negativity surrounding Ireland, Stephen Kenny and the mood in the camp right now, this victory for the u21s and performance from certain players has given everyone a lift.
