Chin(s) up England players, it’s not all that bad.
Sure, you’ve brought shame on your nation by losing to a team with a population comparable to Wigan, but things really could be worse.
Why? Well, in playing your role in one of the worst moments in English sporting history, you’ve bagged yourselves a free whale watching trip… No, really.
As pointed out by Marca before the last 16 clash in Nice, Gudbjartur Jonsson – manager of North Sailing – offered England’s players a free boat trip in Northern Iceland.
“It’s only polite and part of Icelandic hospitality culture,” said Jonsson.
“The poor players may not be able to return home as their fans would be furious to lose to a small country of only 300,000 inhabitants, so we’re offering a peaceful day watching whales in a small town in Northern Iceland with beautiful nature and nice people as compensation.”
The England players have since touched down in Luton following their showing. As far as we know, they are yet to take Gudbjartur up on his generous offer.
With pre-season only a couple of weeks away, the north of Iceland seems like the perfect place to ride out the storm of angry England fans – although it’s probably a bit nippier there than Marbella, Dubai and the other traditional destinations for footballers in the summer months.
