As Alexis Sanchez has proved, it pays to keep your options open, and that’s exactly what Emre Can has done.
The Liverpool midfielder is out of contract at the end of the season, and has yet to agree a new deal to remain at Anfield. Can has been linked with a summer move to Juventus and now Manchester City reportedly want to sign him on a free transfer. According to The Mirror, Pep Guardiola’s team have “expressed an interest” in the German midfielder.
The report claims that Can does not want to join Juventus, despite the Italian side’s interest in him. He is said to prefer a move to Bayern Munich, where he started his career.
However, the Bundesliga champions announced the signing of Leon Goretzka on Friday. The Schalke midfielder will join on a free transfer at the end of the season, and that could scupper Can’s return to Germany, as Bayern may not be in the market for another midfielder this summer. The report claims Can would prefer to stay in the Premier League, if Bayern are not interested.
He said last week that he could even remain at Anfield, and he appears to be keeping his options open. “My agent is looking after everything, but I am here until the summer,” the 24-year-old told reporters.
“I haven’t signed anything with anyone. I am talking with everyone. Of course I am talking with Liverpool. Why not? I still have a contract here. It is an amazing club. What can I say? My agent does the rest. I just concentrate on my performance and the football. I will give everything for this team.”
The midfielder joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in 2014 for £9.75m.
