Emmanuel Adebayor accuses his family of theft, lies and money-grabbing

Spurs striker says he wants other families to learn from his

Gareth Makim

No wonder he’s needed time away to sort this all out

Emmanuel Adebayor has revealed the extent of the family problems that have kept him away from the Tottenham squad since December and, if everything he writes in an explosive Facebook post is true, then we can’t help but feel sorry for a player who has been oft-maligned in English football.

In a lengthy post on the social media site, the 31-year-old Togolese striker claims:

– His brother stole 21 phones after Adebayor got him a place into a French football academy

– His mother refused to speak to him after the birth of his daughter

– His sister kicked his half-brother out of a $1.2million house he was letting them stay in and rented out the property

– His older brother asked for money to travel home to a family funeral but did not show up

– His family demanded he build a house for each of them and pay them a monthly wage

– They questioned his efforts to set up his SEA Foundation

It’s quite incredible stuff, and once again, if true, is yet another example of the stress the demands of family and friends place on those who find wealth through sport.

Adebayor insists he is not trying to settle scores or complain about squandered fortunes, but instead give a warning to other African families.

SEA, I have kept these stories for a long time but I think today it is worth sharing some of them with you. It’s true…
